Fantastic and safe beach for kids to have fun. Plenty of shady areas to sit and the ocean temperature is warm. The view of Rangitoto and North Head is always beautiful. It's a better option than Narrow Neck for younger children. Convenient shops for snacks are just a 2-minute drive away. Ample free street parking available.

This beach is often frequented by locals who treat it as their own private spot. While the setting is beautiful, the residents can be unwelcoming to outsiders. It's worth checking out if you're nearby, but it's not worth a long trip just to visit this beach.

Charming beach and nature reserve. Stunning wildlife, quite peaceful during the off-season. At the far end of the beach, there are some fantastic hikes that are especially lovely on sunny days.

Whether you seek tranquility or excitement, high tide or low, Cheltenham is a charming beach. When the tide is low, it reveals hundreds of meters of sand, making it the first of many stunning beaches along the North Shore's east coast as you leave the Waitemata Harbour and pass by North Head. It's a popular destination for swimmers who enjoy diving off the raft, children learning to sail, numerous para surfers gliding over the shallow bay, dog walkers, and even navy squads in training.

During low tide, you can walk at least a few hundred meters into the sea, and the water will only reach mid-calf. We visited on a weekday afternoon, and it was quite peaceful. Public toilets and changing rooms are available at Balmain Reserve, which is located roughly halfway along the beach. There is also an outdoor shower at the Matai Road beach entrance.
