The Fascinating Story
Sand Island, known for its healing powers and enchanting spring scenery, also has an intriguing story behind it. Legend has it that the island was formed when a saint poured sand into the sea at its base. Here's the full tale...
In the past, the location across the shore in Çardak, now known as Salbaş (Başsal), was covered in dense forests. During that time, the Ottomans secretly constructed rafts. Once the preparations were complete, they launched their rafts from the tip of Sand Island and embarked on a journey towards European civilization in 1358. However, a daring saint named the Red Deli Sultan, who was not allowed on the rafts, began walking towards Gallipoli with sand on his skirt. Everywhere he passed, the land turned into sand. Those on the rafts witnessed this and exclaimed, "Stop the rafts, this saint will block the Bosphorus!" When they finally brought the saint onto the raft, he sprinkled all the sand from his skirt, and according to the rumor, Sand Island was formed.
Sand Island eagerly awaits rheumatism patients seeking healing and solace.
