Cephalonia: The Beach Jewel of the Ionian Sea

Map of Kefalonia

Long scenic beaches surrounded by pine groves or limestone cliffs, cozy coves and underwater caves, therapeutic red sand, and turtle nests – all these wonders can be found while vacationing in Cephalonia. But where should you go? To make your choice easier, we've compiled a small list based on tourist reviews, highlighting the best beaches in several categories.

Small and interesting Beaches

Small beaches are popular with vacationers mainly because they tend to be less crowded, allowing for a relaxed and carefree atmosphere. Additionally, many of Cephalonia's cozy beaches are true gems with a unique vibe. They are “cool” because your vacation definitely won’t be boring, as these sites offer more than just the typical swimming and sunbathing experience of a regular beach.

Wonderful cool water, a good pebble beach with some shade in the morning from the cliffs. Great for snorkeling. There's a bar where you can get coffee, sandwiches, and ice cream.

Top Scenic Beaches

Most beaches in Cephalonia are "Instagram-worthy," featuring clear seas and beautiful sunsets. However, some are truly unique, with crystal-clear waters that change shades from light blue to turquoise and are surrounded by cliffs that rise close to the shore. Here are two such places worth the journey.

Fteri Beach

Fteri Beach with white cliffs and turquoise water, a challenging rocky path to reach the beach.

Key feature: Ranked among the top 30 beaches in Europe by The Guardian.

Getting to the beach itself can be a real adventure. From the parking lot, you’ll have to walk for 30-40 minutes through rocky terrain, following arrows on stones and colorful scarves tied to trees. The bonus: incredibly scenic views along the way and the stunning beauty of the beach itself, which has turquoise waters that contrast against the dazzling white cliffs. The alternative route is by a fairly expensive water taxi from the town of Zola.

Location

The nearest settlement is the village of Kardakata, 7 km from the beach.

Main features

Pebble beach surrounded by white limestone cliffs.

Few people on weekdays, but ferries bring large crowds on weekends.

No umbrellas or natural shade on the beach.

No sunbeds or bars, so bring your own water and snacks.

Best for: Nature lovers who appreciate stunning beauty and are ready for a challenging but scenic trek.

I've never been to such a beautiful untouched beach. The water is perfect, and the scenery is simply incredible. And there were only a few other people. Sturdy shoes for the hike and beach shoes for the beach are a must.

White Rocks Beach

White Rocks Beach with white and amber-striped cliffs, accessible only by sea.

Key feature: The cliffs surrounding the beach are uniquely colored; they are white on one side and striped with amber on the other, which was caused by the natural oxidation processes. This contrast is especially striking against the dazzling blue water of the sea.

Location

The beach is 3 km from the resort of Lassi.

Main features

Accessible only by sea, via excursion or water taxi.

The beach is not equipped; there are no facilities.

Crowds arrive with excursion boats, but it's quieter at other times.

Best for: Those who want to make a trip to and from the beach by boat, with the option to swim the last stretch.

Incredibly beautiful. You just can’t imagine how blue the water is! I booked tickets on the Queen B boats, and the brothers who run them let us jump off and swim to shore.

Healing Red Sand Beaches

The red tint of the sand on some Cephalonia beaches is due to red clay, particles of which are washed out by water from the regular yellow sand. Red clay is often used in spa treatments – it cleanses the skin, reduces inflammation, and has antibacterial properties. You can cover yourself in clay and spend the whole day on the beach letting its miraculous effects take place.

Xi Beach

Xi Beach with red sand and beach umbrellas, view of the long sandy shore and beach bar.

Key feature: Mysterious boulders near the shore of Kunopetra Beach move rhythmically from time to time. Scientists believe this is due to seismic activity, but they have no exact explanation. You can also experience the natural spa treatment of red clay if you take a walk to the nearby Kunopetra Beach.

Location

On the Paliki Peninsula, 7 km from the town of Lixouri.

Main features

4 km long sandy beach.

Sunbeds and umbrellas available for rent.

Free parking is nearby, and a bus runs from Lixouri.

There’s a water sports center.

Best for: Families with children who want to combine sunbathing, swimming, and spa treatments.

A cool beach with positive energy. Everyone becomes a kid here: covering themselves in clay, building sandcastles.

Beaches with Party Bars

Beach holidays in Cephalonia can be not only relaxing but also fun and exciting. For a day at the beach with loud, lively music, head to one of the “party” youth beaches with bars and water sports.

Antisamos

Antisamos Beach with pebbles and umbrellas, large water sports center and scenic views.

There’s a viewpoint near the parking lot with stunning views of the bay.

A spacious parking lot is available.

There is a large water sports center.

Very convenient beach, waiters bring drinks to your sunbed. You can spend the whole day at the beach, in the bars, and on the attractions.

Swimming With Turtles

On some beaches in the region, large loggerhead sea turtles come ashore to lay their eggs. Watching them is fascinating, especially if you catch the moment when the hatchlings emerge and make their way to the sea. However, touching the turtle eggs is strictly prohibited – local authorities protect them, and nesting areas are always marked with special signs.

Mounda

Mounda Beach with long sandy shore and turtle nests, beach with umbrellas and café.
Mounda Beach with Sandy Shore and Turtle Nests
Key feature: Many turtle nests on the beach, marked with reed pyramids. It’s important to follow the nesting rules – these are outlined on a sign at the entrance, and you should clean up after yourself. The beach is public and open to everyone, but on its right side, there’s an unofficial nudist area. Keep this in mind when planning a family vacation.

Location

3.7 km from the village of Skala.

Main features

Long sandy beach.

Usually not crowded.

Sunbeds and umbrellas available for rent.

Free parking is available above the beach.

Best for: Those who want to relax without large crowds, observe turtle nests, and are not bothered by the presence of naturists.

Mounda Beach with Sandy Shoreline and Naturist Area

A wonderful sandy beach and one of the few in Cephalonia that is suitable for children: the water stays shallow for a long time, so even the youngest can safely enjoy it. We especially liked the beach bar, beautifully designed with many cozy spots to relax and escape the midday sun.

We have not listed all the interesting beaches in Cephalonia. On this magical island, you can find both busy and quiet, sandy and pebbly places to relax. Explore the beach map and create your own ranking based on our recommendations.
