My brother and I took our boys to the beach for a fishing trip, hoping to enjoy a peaceful day in the sun. However, our experience was marred by the arrival of a police officer who approached us and claimed that we were not allowed to be in the water. Despite our protests that we were not in the water, the officer insisted that we had crossed a small indentation in the ground with a few inches of water in it, and therefore were in violation of the rules. What made matters worse was that we noticed two white men standing waist-deep in the water, and yet they were not approached by the officer. As the only black people on the beach at the time, we found this treatment to be discriminatory and offensive. As a retired police officer myself, I was appalled by the officer's behavior and attitude. We left the area without causing any trouble, but we will never return to Saint Luis Pass if this is the way people are treated there.

This hidden gem was once the best-kept secret on the Island, and I've been a regular visitor for years. However, it had been some time since my last visit until this past weekend when we decided to take our boys for an impromptu beach day. Although it was a bit more crowded than it used to be, it was still lovely. It was a Saturday and the start of summer, so the Island was buzzing with activity. I would recommend a four-wheel drive vehicle due to the soft sand. Fortunately, the beach was clean, and we were fortunate to have clear water (which is not always the case in Galveston). While there are signs prohibiting swimming and wade fishing due to the currents, the beach patrol is vigilant in informing visitors. As a parent of small children, we were content playing in the shallow surf just off the beach. It's still less crowded than the East Beach areas, and there's no need to pay or obtain a permit to drive onto the beach. West Beach is where it's at.

I had an enjoyable experience at the beach. Despite the gusty and chilly weather, I attempted fishing, but unfortunately, it was not successful. However, my friends and I decided to set up our tent on the bay side and spend the night there. Although we didn't catch any fish, we relished each other's company and the serene environment.

Every weekend, my husband and I come to this beach to fish. As I write this, we are currently here with the hopes of catching a big one! Over the years, we have been lucky enough to witness a diverse range of sea creatures in their natural habitat.

The beach is a refreshing location to spend leisure time and discover new things. However, it would be ideal if all visitors could demonstrate a greater level of respect for the environment and remove their waste when leaving. It is becoming increasingly rare to find beaches that still permit driving, so we should appreciate this privilege and refrain from providing justification for its closure.
