Tsambika beach (is also named Tsampika) is a unique and well-equipped shore in the south-eastern part of the island Rhodos that’s located between cities Rhodes and Lindos in 16 miles from the capital. It is located at the foot of the mountains, including the same-name mountain Tsambika.
The name of the mountain and the beach comes from the word «spark» in the local dialect. According to the legend, once a shepherd noticed a strange gale on the mountain. When he reached the place, he saw a holy image of the Virgin Mary. Now, the monastery of Panagia Tsambika is located in this place. The holy image is stored there up to the present day.
According to the opinion of many tourists that have visited the place, Tsambika is the most beautiful beach in Greece. Every year, travelers come there to enjoy recreation in local sights. The beach is surrounded by pure emerald turquoise waters of the Mediterranean Sea and picturesque mountains. It is these views that arise in the imagination when reading ancient Greek mythology.
It’s necessary to pay attention that the Tsambika beach essentially differs from other resorts on Rhodos. The issue is that there are no hotels, and the infrastructure is less developed. There are almost no shops, and not so many taverns and cafes.
The sandy beach Tsambika extends over 0,5 miles between mountains. It’s rather spacious and broad, and there are no big crowds of tourists. The sand on the shore is fine and almost niveous, beautifully shimmering in the sun. Occasionally, small stones may be found. There’s no litter, so the place is safe for children.
The beach is known for its pure water. Depending on the position of the sun and the time of day, it may change its shade from a bright blue to emerald. The bottom is also sandy, and it isn't bluffy. Due to the shallow depth, the rays of the sun quickly warm the water. That’s why Tsambika Beach is a great place to relax with small children. At the same time, if you like to swim deep, you do not have to go several hundred meters, and the depth grows quite noticeably.
The beach is arranged with everything necessary for recreation. There are set deck-chairs and sunshades, which will be enough for all tourists. It’s possible to rent one of them for 5 euros for a day. A set of two deck-chairs and a sunshade costs 10 euros. Also, there are available shower stalls, cabanas and portable toilets (0,5 euro). They are kept clean. There are also several cafes and a minimarket.
The beach is quite long, there is even a special section for nudists. It doesn’t differ from the main island’s zone in the matter of infrastructure.
The resort season on Tsambia lasts from May to October when the temperature hovers around 25-35°C. Moreover, at this time (especially in August) there are almost no rainfalls. Since the beach is surrounded by mountains, the wind doesn’t blow there. The water in the sea is calm, without too big waves.
Foremost, Tsambika is an ideal place for passive beach recreation: sunbathing and enjoying pure blue water. There are small cafes near the water park where you can buy a refreshing drink, as well as snacks and taste Mediterranean cuisine. An inflatable town for kids is set in the water, so they’ll be able to have fun.
If you’re a bit tired of classical beach recreation, it’s possible to find more active entertainment on Tsambika. Tourists often form teams themselves and play football or volleyball on playgrounds. If you follow colorful small flags, you’ll be able to find a local sports complex. There it’s possible to rent various types of equipment for water sports.
In the southern part of the beach Tsambika there’s a meeting place of thrill-seekers. They drive up the mountain on ATVs, arrange races and joint bouts. It’s a very exciting spectacle! Extreme sports enthusiasts get together in the evening and not every day. So, you may not worry that they may interfere with your calm rest.
Hikers may climb up the mountain and walk to the monastery. People visit the holy place not only to watch it and pray to Virgin Mary. They also want to admire beautiful views from here: mountains, blue sea and alabaster houses in the distance.
The beach Tsambika is located distantly from hotels and inns, you may reach it only by transport. It’s possible to take a bus from Rhodes to Lindos, Haraki, Lardos, Archangelos, or Pefkos. It will be necessary to get off it on the turn after the sign Santa Maria Tsambika, warning the driver in advance.
