Martsalo beach

The beach is a true gem, nestled at the end of a one-hour stroll through the gorge bearing the same name. While the path is generally easy to navigate, there may be moments where one could lose their way, leading to a slightly more challenging terrain with more obstacles such as rocks and branches. However, the lack of clear markings should not deter anyone from embarking on this adventure. Upon exiting the canyon, one is rewarded with a stunning, albeit small, beach. I cannot speak to the crowds it may attract in the summer months, but during my winter visit, it was a serene and untouched paradise. The gorge itself boasts a few clusters of beautiful Cretan palms, adding to the natural splendor of this wild and breathtaking destination.

As we trudge along the primitive trail, passing by the obligatory cave church of Panagia Marsaliani, we finally arrive at the bed of the canyon where the last remnants of indigenous palm trees can be found. The path ahead is clearly marked with small piles of rocks, leading us to the crystalline waters of Martsalos beach in a mere 15-20 minutes. A handful of tall tamarisk trees provide meager shade, while a ramshackle shelter with a table and chairs offers a brief respite from the scorching sun. Don't forget to bring your own water, as there is none to be found here. This spot is a must-see for nature enthusiasts and those who can endure a bit of discomfort. However, be warned that the surrounding villagers may take over the area and transform it into their own personal farm, complete with unsightly semi-permanent shacks.

This serene and breathtaking beach is a true haven for those seeking tranquility and seclusion. The absence of modern amenities and water facilities only adds to the charm of this place, allowing you to disconnect from the hustle and bustle of daily life. A leisurely 20-30 minute walk from the end of the dirt road takes you to this hidden gem, where you can bask in the natural beauty of the surroundings and soak up the peaceful atmosphere. This beach is a must-visit for anyone looking to escape the crowds and find solace in nature's embrace.

The journey to the beach was quite arduous, but the destination did not live up to the hype. The beach was lackluster and unimpressive, failing to provide any respite from the tedious journey. The experience was far from enjoyable and left me feeling disappointed.
