Fossil Ledges is a stunning destination to explore! We easily navigated the muddy trails in my F150 without any issues. The water is incredibly clear, making snorkeling an absolute must-do activity. Unlike the oceans, you won't have to worry about being eaten by fish in the great lakes. Spending a full day at Fossil Ledges is highly recommended. Just make sure to arrive early, as parking spots for your vehicle might be limited.

The island offers an incredible experience. You can easily stroll out into Lake Huron for quite a distance and enjoy the breathtaking scenery.

We had a great time at Fossil Ledges! We drove out in a suburban (with flat tires) and several side by sides. The trail was definitely meant for off-road vehicles, with puddles, ponds, and whoops to navigate. When we arrived, there were a few parking spots before heading down to the ledges. The water was fantastic - cool and not too cold for swimming. There were some bugs, but nothing unusual for the area. We found some amazing stones and rocks filled with fossils! The trail can get busy, so be sure to drive safely.

We managed to reach the beach in a 2020 all wheel drive equinox. The journey was quite slow, and we almost decided to stop at the beaver swamps because it appeared to be in poor condition. However, a vehicle driving alongside us informed us that the water was only 14 inches deep. So, we decided to continue and successfully made it through. The entire drive was smooth and solid, resembling sheet rock. There were no soft areas or deep tracks, but we did encounter some potholes and rocks. It took us nearly an hour to cover a distance of 6 miles. Overall, it was a pleasant drive and I would highly recommend it. The lady at the tourist information center advised against taking our equinox to the ledges, but we disregarded her advice and went anyway. However, it's probably not advisable to attempt it right after rainfall.

This beach is a great place to discover and observe fossils embedded in the rocks. However, the last two miles of the journey can be quite difficult and slow. It's recommended to have a vehicle with higher clearance, but 4-wheel drive is not necessary. Be prepared to drive through numerous puddles along the way.
