Manzanillo is a charming fishing village located closest to the Panama border in Costa Rica. It maintains its rustic and unspoiled charm - a quality that I truly appreciate! The accommodations are simple, with a few basic hotels and cabinas available. There is only one local shop, a handful of sodas, and a few bar/restaurants in the area. The primary mode of transportation is the Mepe bus, which runs approximately every hour or three times a day. To explore the area, it is recommended to either rent a car or a scooter from Puerto Viejo. The Caribbean atmosphere in Manzanillo is truly unique - with a focus on local cuisine, unlike the nearby Playa Cocles or Playa Chiquita, which cater more to upscale European and American tourists. The wildlife national park refuge is a must-visit, with a small donation required for entry. The self-guided trek through the park is an adventure in itself (not for the faint of heart). On the beach, you'll find a mix of locals (ticos) enjoying the waves, with swimming also possible.
