The beach area is absolutely stunning, with plenty of stair sections and trails leading down to the shore. It's important to wear shoes with good grip or go barefoot, as the rocks can be quite slippery. The black and green mossy areas are particularly slick, so be sure to choose your footing carefully. When you reach the tide pools, take care to step only on the top of the rocks to preserve the delicate ecosystems.
For the best experience, check the La Jolla tide chart before you go. The tide pools are at their most impressive when the tide is going out or low. The water is crystal clear and refreshing, but quite cold. There's an abundance of marine life to discover, including crabs, sea anemone, chitons, and more.
This beach is perfect for families, with plenty of young kids and older folks enjoying the scenery. We parked for free on the north end, north of La Jolla cove, and it was a pleasant 1-mile walk to the pools on a sidewalk. Overall, this is a must-visit spot for anyone looking to explore the beauty of the California coast.
