This beach is a bit out of the way, so you don't have to worry about the watchi watchi men trying to charge you to park on a public street. Instead of going here, I'd recommend traveling a few miles south to Playa Flamingo. It's a much better beach, not as crowded as Tamarindo, and you won't be hassled by the watchi watchi men. They may try to get you to rent umbrellas from them, but if you're parking on the road right next to the beach, you don't need them. The one time I did pay a watchi watchi man, I gave him two dollars and told him that was all I had. He graciously watched my car and helped me back up into traffic when it was time to leave. The people of Costa Rica are great, but the watchi watchi men can be a real pain. We just walked a bit instead of parking at Tamarindo beach to avoid them.

This beach is great - it's peaceful and tranquil. Swimming is excellent and there are plenty of shady spots provided by the trees. The water is crystal clear, making it a highly recommended spot!

This beach should be called Sugar Reef, not Sugar Beach! It's a pretty beach, but watch out for the rocks - the water is wavy and sandy, so you can't see the bottom. I cut and bruised myself on a rock/coral when I went for a swim (I'm still black and blue a week later from the injury). It's quiet and there are no services during the high season (Christmas to New Year) as the only hotel in the area, Sugar Beach Hotel, is closed for refurbishment until January 22nd. The beach sand and swimming is similar to Playa Brasilito - not sugary white at all! A taxi from Brasilito during the high season costs $20 (probably less at other times, as it's only 7 km/20 minutes away) and the entrance is 50m from the Sugar Beach Hotel entrance (down a rocky pebbly path) across from the escuela.

The owners of the beach seem to think they own it, despite the fact that there are no private beaches in Costa Rica. The security guards are quite hostile. Fortunately, the locals have provided a way to access the beach without trespassing on private property, allowing visitors to enjoy its seclusion.
